Let’s talk Instagram captions, shall we? Specifically, how to write awesome and effective Instagram captions.
There’s no denying it - Instagram is a huge platform for creative entrepreneurs.
Whether you’re a writer, coach, or maker, I know how important this platform is to your business.
It's worthwhile trying to cultivate a
engaged community a, but turning them into customers can be challenging.
With a few simple tweaks to the way you’re posting, you’ll be able to write captions that get your audience to take action.
If you're anything like me, you spend a lot of time creating the perfect image.
But you should be spending as much time writing your post copy as you are creating the perfect flat lay.
You need to have great images to stand out, but if turning the double tap into an add to cart is what you’re after, your captions need to shine.
The good news is you don’t need to be a wordsmith to write effective captions.
Try these quick tips before you hit post and you’ll be writing with the best of them.
Keep your copy brief
You don’t need to pen the next novel or write
for your posts to be effective.
All you need to do is give people an idea of what they are looking and why you’re posting.
Here’s a great example from
“February Flowers are coming so soon! Feb. 1st this pattern will be available in my @Etsy shop!”
Here she highlights her product which is a flower embroidery piece, says the date it's on sale and where to buy.
So keep it short, direct and to the point.
Pro tip: Using active voice makes your audience feel like you’re talking to them.
Don’t rush it
While you might be in a hurry to share that new photo you’ve snapped, take some time to craft the caption first.
Finding the right words can be hard. Don’t rush the process.
Grab a pen and paper and write down a few ideas. Then sit it down.
Have a cuppa or take a walk then come back to your drafts.
Edit the one that resonates the most with you, edit it, post it and forget it.
Once it’s on the ‘gram, let it go.
If you’re stuck for ideas, don’t stress.
Remember to explain what it is and why you’re posting.
Keeping the caption simple, sweet and brief is the way to go.
Don’t go crazy on the hashtags
I know it’s tempting to go hash tag crazy but please try and limit yourself to ones that are in your niche.
You are trying to find the right audience, not the biggest.
Brainstorm the hashtags that are right for your audience. What are they searching? Where are they hanging out online?
You can also check out the hashtags other artists in your niche for some inspiration.
Add personality with Emoji’s
These tiny images can add personality to your posts.
Try adding 2 - 3 at the end of your captions.
Pick ones that resonate with you and show a little bit of your personality (peach, anyone?)
You can use them to draw attention to your call-to-action.
Which brings us to our last and most important point
Use a Call to Action every time you post
I know this might seem obvious, but Call-to-Actions are a must in your Instagram captions.
This is essential if you’re trying to get people off Instagram and engaging with your work on your website, your image shared or trying to get the attention of an influencer
So, make sure that you include a
crafted CTA in your Instagram captions.
