“Email is dead, long live email!”
This seems to be the refrain we’ve been hearing across the world wide web for a while. But it isn't so!
In fact you really need an email list if you want to grow your business.
Research shows that email is more popular than ever.
Just like we need coffee to live, folks view emails as essential in their daily life.
You might have signed up for business tips with Maker Academy, be looking for bargain books, or taking inspiration from Etsy newsletters.
Whatever your email preference, you can’t deny that we live and breathe in our inbox.
It should go without saying that having an email list is essential for growing your creative business.
You need an email list so you can continue to engage buyers after they’ve made a purchase.
It's also a great way to reach people who haven't bought from you, yet.
Need more convincing? Here’s why you’ve got to build that email list.
You have control over how you use it
Have you fallen victim to the Facebook Algorithm? Or noticed that your ‘gram group aren’t seeing as many of your pics?
Social media is excellent but you’re at the whim of Zuckerberg and co.
When you have your very own email list, you are the one in control. You get to decide what messages you give people, and when.
If someone has signed up to your email list, and you’re not spamming them, it’s a safe bet they’re going to open your email because they want to hear from you.
It’s cheap (and effective) advertising
Having an email list is a really cheap way to advertise your work!
Mailchimp, my favourite email provider, is free for up to 2000 subscribers. Plus, it is ridiculously simple to use.
You can drag and drop the elements you want to put into your email (eDM for those who want to add fancy marketing speak to their vocab) and you’re off.
Mailchimp also has some really cool automation features.
These let you send emails automatically to your buyers and browsers based on actions they do or do not take.
It’s such a great tool and prices for this bad boy start at $10 a month but if you sign up with this link, you’ll get $30 credit. Nice!
You can talk directly to your buyers
Let me tell you a little secret, finding out exactly what your buyers want, love and hate about your work is so important.
From this knowledge, you'll be able to grow.
Being able to speak directly to people interested in your work is a great way to get insights and develop new products.
You can hear directly from people what they want and then take that as inspiration for your own work.
That is so valuable as a maker.
For so long, we didn’t have an email list at Maker Academy. We were hoping that you would find us and keep coming back. It’s just madness!
The web is a busy place and there are heaps of incredible bloggers out there, how on earth would you remember us?
So we fixed this and added an email signup form to the bottom of our blog and what a world of difference it made!
When we went out with our free boot camp email course, over half of our list signed up.
Our list is small (want to help us grow and get tips into your inbox? Sign up!) but half a list is excellent, no matter how you look at it.
